The Chiari & Syringomyelia Foundation held its annual Charity Ball, honoring Senator Andrew J. Lanza, on March 2nd of this year, with a twist. This year the event, which took place at the Hilton Garden Inn Staten Island, NY, included roulette tables, Texas Hold 'Em, blackjack, craps, slot machines, dealers and much more.
The evening began with an elegant cocktail hour, consisting of delicious hors d'oeuvres, white-glove service and silent auction. The cocktail reception provided an opportunity for guests to arrive, meet one another and become acquainted prior to the start of the event. A video, along with several photographs of individuals who suffer from Chiari malformation, syringomyelia and related disorders were displayed throughout the room during the reception and sparked conversation in many of the guests, both familiar and newly acquainted.
After a brief welcome from CSF's Executive Director, Dorothy Poppe, and several introductory remarks from CSF's Chairman, Paul Farrell, there was a video presentation regarding the CSF Annual Think Tank Meeting, a program meant to benefit from a portion of the funds raised at the Monte Carlo Night. Following this, there was a powerfully emotional tribute to Heather Andrews, a vibrant and beautiful woman who had been taken away entirely too early in her young life, due to complications of Chiari malformation. An award was presented to her mother and sister, Janice Andrews and Amber Capra.
Following these moving presentations, guests completed their dinners and were free to gamble for the rest of the night—an invitation in which every guest was happy to partake. The evening was quite a success and was truly a good time for all involved. A special thank you to this year's sponsors and to all the volunteers who always help to make this event so amazing.
